ALAC: Was Last Night Really Worth It?

May 5, 2008 – 5:03 am | Written by KiwiPulse

I always thought that my body can handle up to 24 pack of beer by occasion. Well to be frank…I never reach more than 8 beers and with some shooters I will sure fall asleep in no time. The ad campaign below brought by ALAC ( The Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand ) are trying to change the drinking culture that costs the country greatly. They are delivering a message that” it’s not the drinking, it’s how we’re drinking.” As explained on their website: ” We don’t drink in a measured fashion. We bank our drinking and we spend it all at once and this is when the most harm happens.”

I have visited their website and found a lot of helpful information that I didn’t know before which will help me to drink more safely during my next hockey playoff games with friends. I am sure everyone will find the info on the website helpful as well. One message from their website stand out in my mind and I would like to share it with everyone: “Drinking alcohol is your choice, you choose whether to make it good or bad. Listen to your body and think about your limit - and tomorrow morning”.

I went on a drinking binge I’m not so proud of  I’m in recovery, I went eight yrs and then blew it around Easter…I am now back in recovery…I hate that when that happens…

These ads are clever. And when someone is really hungover, they might as well be stuck inside a giant glass because it’s not like they are contributing anything to the world in that physical/mental state. People really do need to be more aware of the quantity they drink. It can be difficult to monitor when you are out with friends, but you’ve got to do it!

Great visuals for a good social theme. Very likely to catch the attention of the target audience and convey the message. It would be nice to see some copy too.

I’m not a heavy drinker, because I hate it when people are drunk. They turn stupid and do embarrassing stuff.
Also the pictures are kinda creepy. but in a good way I guess. if that makes sense

There is this really successful line of Foster’s beer ads, with the tag line ‘how to speak Australian’ which i always thought was very funny, but this is the flip side of the coin i guess, in that this relates to a whole drinking culture which may not be so funny after all!

As a 57 year old adult child of alcoholics, I am happy to say I have not turned into one myself, but I sure have killed a lot of brain cells in my time. I should have known better, but I wanted to “have fun”. Now, I am on meds where I can’t drink (Lexapro) and don’t miss the booze much. Well, except a beer with some Mexican food. LOL No, I am not a doper, I have fibromyalgia and the Lexapro helps with that. Good article!

About 3 years ago I decided not to drink anymore, I see no sense in doing it and I can have fun without it.
Before that, I used to drink beer and other alcoholic drinks.

I find these ads smart, but I still think they need to go deeper.

Those ads are really clever! I used to drink like crazy my college years. Now I find, at the age of 36, and after having 3 kids, not only can I not drink like I used to, but I don’t want to either because of my 3 kids.

I never get drunk because I don’t want to sit inside the glass :)…The worst effect of being drunk is we are loosing our self control. That could cause anything bad happened.

The Pictures show just how more graphically possible it is to shock a drinker into caution. While all of us indulge in the occassional drink and also know the dangers of overindulgence some people just never learn.
