Amnesty International: Beijing 2008

You have probably seen the latest campaign from Amnesty International that I published back in September 2008, China is getting ready. They are at it again with another ad; the razor barbed wire around the torch. It seems that the campaign was a success because all the news channels are covering the handful of protests surrounding the International Olympic Torch Relay this month. China is the world’s leader in the use of the death penalty. What the Amnesty International are asking for are positive changes such as a reform of the death penalty system, a greater reporting freedom for foreign journalists (who have been overshadowed by stalled reform of detention without trial), repression of human rights defenders and Internet censorship. Is it too much to ask from the world most populated country?
Yes I can tell you I have personally experienced Internet censorship from them. When the post, China is getting ready, first got published Kiwipulse received over 5,000 visitors from a Chinese Forum. The title of the post on the forum was “Look How The Outsider Think About Us”. Then I noticed that my link from that article was removed. I didn’t understand why until I found out that one of the forum’s policies is not to allow any links from outsiders. If I understand this clearly; they don’t like opening themselves to the world and our opinions are not welcome with wide open arms.
Recently, Amnesty International have published an article about the which says that at least 1,252 people were executed in 24 countries and at least 3,347 people were sentenced to death in 51 countries. Many more were simply killed by the state, in secret, in countries including China, Mongolia and Viet Nam. Do you think it will be safe in China during the summer Olympic?

Yes, I think that it will be safe in China for those visitors who behave like guests in a country, without being judgmental about their local issues. In fact, I am reasonably certain that it will perhaps be safer than being at ones one country. The Chinese have too much at stake and would take extra precautions to ensure the safety of every visitor.
The Amnesty ad is simple, effective and says a lot. Very creative. To what effect however? Human rights violations will continue as long as man remains the way he is.
This is hard for China and it’s been abig chaos for their country. Hi just a visit from my entrecard

The Chinese, as a people are extremely bothered about keeping up appearances and the government even more so, so they will be at pains to see that nothing untoward happens.

I’m not sure about taking a trip to China. Their laws are their own, and I’m not really willing to subject myself to that at present.

Last day i saw in the news paper that china have imposed a ban for smoking in many places there in beijing for the olympics… and there is another interesting stat.. that china have the 1/3 of the total smokers… will see whats gonna happen now…

Well, I do agree that China is unwilling to open themselves up to the world. They are afraid of the thinkings that will be shown and imposed on their people. More importantly, they are afraid that their people will become less patriotic or become against the Government. Do you know China bans blogspot? And what is worse, China’s Chinese still think they have alot of freedom compared to other Chinese in other countries. Lolx

And what is wrong if someone feels that he is free as a Chinese in China more so than a Chinese say in Indonesia or Philipines? In one’s own country of origin, one feels more at ease if one is economically well placed than those that have recently emigrated.

Personally I believe most countries are in no position to judge China. For instance the United States seeks to condemn China for human rights violations, but the US has also broken similar rights. The only difference is that the human rights problems in the United States are not as well known as those in China. It is time that the United States started criticizing themselves rather than everyone else.

Who are we to pass judgment on China. I am sure the Olympics will be as safe as ever. They will go to great lengths to make sure nothing untoward takes place.
