Amnesty International: China Is Getting Ready

Posted in Advertising

When I first saw these ads, I didn’t know much about Amnesty International and their mission in the world. After some digging I’ve learned that the Amnesty focus on five key areas: Women’s Rights, Children’s Rights, Ending Torture and Execution, Rights of Refugees and Rights of Prisoners of Conscience. Their primary mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

In the name of ensuring stability and harmony in the country during the 2008 Olympic Games, the Chinese Government continues to detain and harass political activists, journalists, lawyers and human rights workers. Get involved www.amnesty.sk.”

Sad and so true..we are so limited as to how effective we can be regarding human rights, and discrimination. Consequently, we bury our heads, and pretend it doesn’t happen. Thanks for the reminder..I think?

these ads are ridiculous and defamatory. The image just fit the prejudiced imagination of china. Using some computer-composed picture as an accusation, I cannot see the rationality.

  3. rkingjy on

The ads is a real lie! It’s suck!

This ad is all about shock value and a very over the top. I think it would be better if it had that tank with the college kid like in Tienamen Square.

these ads are NOT a lie or an exaggeration. this is what is happening! let’s cut the crap

I have lived in China for the last 10 years. things are no where near as paranoid and as bad as they were the first time i visited in the 1980’s. That said, things are still bad, and right now is a very bad time to be anyone viewed as a “agitator”. An agitator in china, can be anything from a lawyer who demands a fair trial to a peasant who complains about the water in his village being polluted by the new multinational up stream.
These ads are not half as shocking as the reality on the ground. Anyone who says differently is either an idiot, works for the Chinese government, or has never seen anything of China outside Beijing or Shanghai. Don’t forget that the growth in the Chinese economy has only benefited a minority of the country. 800 million Chinese are still ridiculously poor, and getting angrier everyday. over 10,000 riots/or protests occurred last year. Most are related to government corruption. More than anything the government of China fears active political debate. many of these people who have participated in these public acts of disobedience languish in Chinese prisons as political enemies of the state.

 so to the previous to posters nullpointer and rkingjy. you are both idiots. to anyone who posts after this claiming something similar to the previous two idiots, they’re idiots as well.

I also live in China, only for 3 and a half years. Ted L. is right! My girlfriend (a poor farm girl from the south) is worried that she will have to leave Beijing next year before the Olympics with all the other undesirables (anybody who is poor and not from Beijing). They are doing other nice little things like wiping out entire poor neighborhoods or erecting huge walls so nobody can see the way people really live. The gov. has also shut down several schools for migrant workers children in order to force them out of the city. Keep in mind these people came to Beijing to get a job and a new start on life, and now they’re have those simple things stripped from them. I think as many people as possible should come to China during the Olympics, so they can see the truth, and spread the word!
P.S. this blog will probably not be available in China after a few more days.

  9. KiwiPulse on

Thanks Ted L. and Jake for sharing that with us. From where I am, I could say that the ads is a bit exaggerated. Because my view and understanding of China is not clear. It’s sad to know that a big country like China can be corrupted and even more now. I’m glad to know that Amnesty International exist and protect those people who live unfairly. :???:

What a joke that people actually believe that these photos are an not true to form. Sure there aren’t boxers beating up prisoners but be assured that prisoners are being beaten up. Executions are taking place behind closed doors with no transparency and people die for no reason than a slight aggravation to the authoritarian regime. This country is not communist, let’s get real. Communists do not allow for casino strips or luxury resorts and hotels. This is an authoritarian regime bent on retaining control at the expense of the country.

  11. boycott 2008 on

No, it’s not. China is the world’s No. 1 killer and torturer. Way more executions, ways more political prisoners, way more people tortured and beaten in police houses and prisons, than anywhere in the entire world. NOT SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF IS IT?

They denied it for years but in the end, China admitted to using political and religious prisoners for organs and then told us to mind our own business. The fat whores in the US Congress won’t do anything about it because they know they may all need new livers in 10 years. But you should all remember:

When you dance with the Devil,

Well. I beg to differ. The United States is by far the World’s No. 1 killer and torturer, with its brutal killings of innocent civilians in Iraq and numerous other countries for the past 50 years and its prison camps and torture chambers worldwide.

As a matter of fact, the US government is a major factor in world unrests. It has been actively targeting world governments that do not succumb to the will of the hegemon, using it’s hitmen to sabotage other countries and/or invade them. At the same time, Washington is shameless enough to go to bed with some of the world’s most brutal and corrupted regimes just because they have oil, or whatever that the rich fat merchants in Washington need. These countries behead their citizens and have no elections at all, not to mention the rampant corruption.

And my question to all of you hypocritical vigilantes is: why don’t you boycott the US Olympics? or boycott anything that’s US?

  18. Uncle Sam on

Amnesty International. Stop being a hypocritical ass/wimp.

Go run some ads against US invasion of Iraq, intended but already-miserably-failing invasion of Iran, stolen election resulted in a retard president, raping of democracy and freedom by bedding with primitive oil dictators and warring dissenting democracies.

Ads like these, only fool fools and waste your money. Though the world never lacks those, it is never governed by them, at least not for long.

Or if you insist, fine, just go boycott China Olympics. Your boycott will fail, face-in-the-mud style. I am already laughing.

    Dear Nullpointer,
You are so completely wrong it is staggering. China, under Mao, didn’t murder 1 million or 10 or 20 or 40 or 80 million people. The current estimate released by Norman Davies (Prof. History Oxford) is 100 million dead under Mao’s auspices.
Have a read on what they have, and continue to do to men, women and children in Tibet.
The mainland Chinese govt is the worst regime the world has ever known. Makes Pol Pot look like a schoolboy.

That’s the point. That’s advertising. The images are intended to be new, not images like those of Tienamen Square which are already exhausted of power due to over exposure.
I hope Amnesty International continues to raise awareness and get the lazy west (me) to do something about travesties of justice.

  24. Karl Erfurt on

Well, I don’t see anything wrong with Amnesty International raising awareness of human rights abuses in various countries as long as they are doing it with voluntary donations and are not forcing anyone to support them.

Unfortunately, although China’s current government is clearly too authoritarian for my tastes, we seem to have problems with certain instances of torture “enhanced interrogation techniques” in this country (USA) as well…

  25. Lunatic High on

Kudos, dude. I think people have to realize that Amnesty is not critisizing the Chinese people, they are critisizing the way the government runs its business.

  26. The Fitness Diva on

I just love the “point the finger” attitude some take when one speaks out against the atrocities going on in a particular country.
“Why didn’t you boycott the US Olympics?”, etc. Like, that would completely justify or make better what’s going on in China, Tibet, the Sudan, or wherever else.

Where do they get these people? “Oh, don’t talk about China. Look at the bad stuff this OTHER country is doing.”

“Well, Bobby did it too, Mommy! Not just me!!”

Nyah, nyah, nyah. You sound like a child.

Thank God someone is taking the initiative to do something to help put an end to what’s happening to these people still. You’d rather just sit around and bitch about the US? Pathetic.

The ongoing harassment and detention of journalists makes Beijing’s Olympic pledge on media freedoms seem more like a public relations ploy than a sincere policy initiative.

The PRC has murdered 100 million of its own people after Mao came to power. Murder is the creed of the PRC as to quote Mao “Power comes from the barrel of the gun” or some such ubiquitous phrase. Zhang is so misrepresenting what China does to her own that one can only wonder what he means by lies? China’s own internet. Almost complete censorship.

Want to be Falun Gung” They are murdered on the direct orders of the President? Why - because they stand for SILENT opposition, they stand for free will, for the individual to pursue values the state can’t control. You must understand corruption isn’t a crime, isn’t a disease in China - it’s the means by which the Communist Party maintains hold of the people.

The CIA has been training people from Tibet for decades, just like it did for Talibans or PKK or Turkey, just to get ready for war.

The USA is ready to attack Iran and that’s why Canada is at war against the will of it’s people. We pay to block energy bought from China from Iran.

The news about China has been increasingly negative for years have reached a lying peak. Our sold-out journalist even interpret China’s intentions. Curiously they never do that when talking about Israel and Palestine.

I am not stupid enough to believe Zionist controled medias.

Your kid is unpleasantly naughty and you yell at or even beat him.

Your neighbor’s kid is unpleasantly naughty too. Will you?

Just mind your own business, stop peddling your American style democracy and human rights.

How naïve you are to believe things like that?!
You wanna say that China is bad. That’s ok.We know that we have our problems just like you have yours.
No country or system is perfect. You elect your leader and your people complain.

Your house is on fire and your neighbor’s is on fire too.You stand in front of your neighbor’s shouting to them-”your house is on fire,do something”,laughing loud.

    Will you do that?

You are quarrelling with your mother intensively which makes you angry.Your neighbor burst in to interfere and even threatens to beat your mother. What do you think of that?

Do you expect any interference in your family affair by your neighbors?

You do NOT throw stones while you are live in a glass house.Do you?

You like tomato very much but your neighbor doesn’t.You burst into his house, put a gun againt his head shouting-How dare you s.o.b.

    Will you do that?

Just stop peddling your American style democracy and human rights.

How many innocent Iraq people have been or being killed?

    Mind your own business.

We wash our dirty clothes, you wash yours.

    Thanks.
