Angel Oak: 1,500 Years Old Oak Tree
Posted in Various
The Angel Oak is one of the most famous landmarks on Johns Island, South Carolina, US. What’s so impressive about this live oak tree is that it’s approximately 1,500 years old. The local people called it simply ‘The Tree’. I guess because it’s the only tree around that is so huge and ancient. The Tree has a diameter of spread reaching 160 feet, a circumference of nearly 25 feet and covers 17,100 square feet of ground. Normally a live oak tree don’t grow out and up but this special tree has had plenty of time to do both! They said that this tree has survived countless hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and human interference, so there’s a good chance it will still be there waiting for you.
The Charleston City Council has just approved a plan to put 600 homes and a shopping center on the property surrounding the Angel Oak. It’s good news that the Angel Oak will not be cut down and will remain a natural Low Country treasure visited daily by schools, tourists and locals. An online petition have been opened to protest against the developers who are planning to cut down 55 other grand trees so they can squeeze in as many buildings as possible! Please help them out in the fight against this terrible plan by signing their petition. These days most business people will destroy our earth’s natural beauty just to make more money. ![]()

I can say nothing except Beautiful!!!
If man would only be sensible, there will be many more such trees all over the world. This tree’s karma must be very strong for having survived man’s avarice.
Probably even looks better in real, thanks for the great captivating pictures.

Dear Angel Oak fans,
I came across your website/blog posting about the Angel Oak (AO) and thought you should know she is in jeopardy and could use your help:
The Angel Oak is currently threatened by a multi-acre 600-housing unit development. While developers claim they won’t cut down the Angel Oak itself, they WILL clear cut thousands of trees and hundreds of acres of the surrounding buffer forest and filling in a wetlands that supports wildlife. They do not even mention this in their plans, but instead say only that they won’t kill the Angel Oak.” They either don’t understand or won’t admit, that the surrounding forest has for centuries protected the magnificent Angel Oak from weather and too much human attention (climbing, graffiti, fire risk, et. al.) It is not just a solitary living organism, but also an integral part of an ecosystem now facing this major threat,
The massive development will inevitably, eventually, lead to the death of the Angel Oak tree, be it in years or decades is impossible to predict.
A website with more information about this disaster in the works has been set up by locals: http://www.savetheangeloak.org
Visit it, sign up for email updates, sign the petition, and help preserve the Angel Oak Tree—and the surrounding forest it is a part of—for many more human generations.
Sincerely,
Jack Gescheidt
