In a grocery store 4,820 cans of Campbell’s Soup were used to build an installation piece that spelled Hunger. The signage beside the piece encouraged shoppers to buy one and donate it to their local food bank. As shoppers brought cans from this display the word HUNGER slowly disappeared. This allowed people to see how their individual effort could help bring an end to the problem of hunger. I have hear last month on T.V that some schools in Canada don’t have exam at the end of the month because the students are hunger. They suffer from hunger because they don’t get enough food at home. This is a serious issue because not getting enough food over the long term can lead to malnutrition. I like the idea behind it, simple and clear. Nice idea for a GREAT CAUSE!

What a simple but effective idea. I would like to know how effective this was though, in making people donate to a good cause.

This is indeed a fantastic idea which can be replicated by any one in any big retailer. I am passing on this idea to some people very involved with mid day meals for school children in India.

Any idea what grocery store this was? What a win-win idea - the grocer sells product, the food bank gets stocked, the customer feels happy to help someone in need. Great visual concept as well.

It goes to show you how sometimes a very simple concept can become quite powerful and effective. Very Nice!!

What a waste! Take the dollar you’d spend on the soup and give it to the food bank. Then, they can buy $13 worth of food for that dollar.

I think it’s a great idea. The trouble is, people need a big reminder to give, preferably something visual like this , otherwise they don’t do it.

Now thats a great way to make a statement, and hopefully a difference.

What a great idea. I don’t really know how much food the food bank can buy for $1 - if it’s $13 worth or not, but this is a more tangible thing. People could actually see HUNGER disappear. Maybe that will help them understand that they can make a difference.

A good idea would have been for the food bank to be involved with the store in this. Have a representative right there educating people on what the food bank does. The biggest question I might have is - if the food bank can actually get $13 worth of food for $1, why can’t the rest of us? If people could buy food like that, there would be less hunger because people could afford to feed their families.

Anna,
The food manufacturers are extremely generous in this country. They donate millions of dollars of food for free to the food banks. The food banks are responsible for paying for the freight. Thus, $1=$13 of food. For that reason, the food banks are my favorite charities. The reasons I think the display is such a waste are 1) the monies could be used more judiciously, and 2) nobody is really seeing hunger disappear! They’re seeing a display disappear. Hunger is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And a few cans or even a few hundred cans of soup don’t make hunger disappear. The whole idea behind the display is to make people feel good about themselves for donating a can of soup to the food bank. I just feel that actual money should go to the food banks as it’s more efficient.

This is a really good idea to raise awareness about hunger and the visual aid is affective. Hopefully, people don’t need a visual aid to give but if it helps then go for it.
