The game officially known as the Games of the XXIX (29th) Olympiad will be celebrated from August 8 to 24. The traditional Olympic Torch Relay will begin from March 25 to August 8, 2008. The theme for the relay is “Journey of Harmony” and will last 130 days which the torch will travel 137,000 km. It will be the longest distance of any Olympic torch relay. They will also try an attempt to carry the flame to the top of Mount Everest. From Beijing, the torch will follow a route passing through six continents but most of it will be by air.
The torch for Beijing 2008 Olympic is designed by a team from Lenovo Group. Believe it or not Lenovo is the fourth largest personal computer manufacturer in the world. Have you seen the new logo from Google’s Homepage? Google have updated their logo in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the popular plastic brick, the Lego Brick. The popular toy started his journey in 1932 in the workshop of his creator, Ole Kirk Christiansen. Kirk began creating wooden toys then his company had expanded to producing plastic toys in 1947, but not yet with the brick design. It was only until 1958 that the modern-day brick design was developed and it took another five years to find exactly the right material for it. The Lego brick was patented on January 28, 1958 and the bricks from that year are still compatible with the bricks today!
LEGO Bricks have released over 100 new items for this celebration. I have selected my favorite items below. You can see more at Lego.com.
Happy 50th Birthday LEGO Brick!

From a little Elgin jar to a Penny Harvest Field, the children from New York City schools participated in this extraordinary harvest to collect pennies from family, friends and neighbors. All these pennies don’t actually go to their piggy banks but they are gathered together and are trucked to the Penny Harvest Field. The Penny Harvest Field is at the Rockefeller Center between 50th and 51st Streets. This year, it was opened from December 10 to December 31, 2007. The Field is sponsored by a non-profit program, the Common Cents, who believe that the youngest citizens can spark extraordinary social change if they simply get the support they deserve. Over 850 schools participated this year to this harvest and their goal was to reach $1 million dollars which works out to 100 million pennies! How to get 100 millions pennies out of the field? Well, once the field is closed they used two specialized vacuum trucks to collect the pennies from the field. The rate to remove the pennies is around $1,000 per minute and it will be emptied into twenty-five 20-foot cargo boxes. It’s just amazing how you can get so much money with only pennies! This shows that if we all work together we can move mountains and make a big difference.
