Falkirk Wheel: Genius Invention

Posted in Architecture

My attention was lately attracted by this rotated boat lift. The Falkirk Wheel, named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland, is a rotating boat liftForth. The Wheel is the world’s largest boat lift. It transfers canal boats from one canal to another 100 feet higher. This spectacular centrepiece of the £84.5 million, Millennium Link, is the UK’s largest canal restoration project, developed by British Waterways to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth & Clyde Canal, re-establishing east to west coast access for boats. The structure is located near the Rough Castle Fort and the closest village is Tamfourhill.

Apart from being an engineering and design wonder, The Falkirk Wheel is a great day out. From the stunning Visitor Centre and basin, set at the heart of a natural amphitheatre of landscaped grounds, you can view the revolution of The Wheel or go for a stroll to see it from all angles.

I have included a video from YouTube. Check it out! :D

Wow! That’s was amazing. I watched YouTube over and over, just can’t get enough. Happily Anonymous said it correctly. It would be truly amazing if I can watch it face to face.

Stunning photos! However, Falkirk is not the world’s largest boat lift. I’m not sure which one is, but the Strepy-Thieu boat lift in Belgium is three times the height and can carry much bigger boats! Good photos of it here: http://www.binnenvaartinbeeld.com/strepy_thieu.htm
    (It doesn’t rotate, though!)

This is amazing. What a engineering feat. The photos are great. They gave me a great idea of what this must be like to really see. Thanks it’ll be awhile before I get to Scotland..

The wheel was design by RMJM who also designed the new Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh, this hasn’t been as popular with the public, although I think its great.

Although the Falkirk Wheel may not be the worlds largest boat lift I do believe it is however the worlds largest rotating boat lift. The Strepy-Thieu boat lift in Belgium does not rotate. It is more of a conveyor chain lift. Both of these boat lifts are equally impressive and now that I think about it they remind me an awful lot of amusement park rides I have seen. Makes me wonder if that is where the idea originated from.
    Great post!

Definitely impressive! I think humans really can bring about outstanding achievements, when they’re not to busy fighting with each other. I wonder what would happen if everyone realized that! ;)
