Falkirk Wheel: Genius Invention
My attention was lately attracted by this rotated boat lift. The Falkirk Wheel, named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland, is a rotating boat liftForth. The Wheel is the world’s largest boat lift. It transfers canal boats from one canal to another 100 feet higher. This spectacular centrepiece of the £84.5 million, Millennium Link, is the UK’s largest canal restoration project, developed by British Waterways to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth & Clyde Canal, re-establishing east to west coast access for boats. The structure is located near the Rough Castle Fort and the closest village is Tamfourhill.
Apart from being an engineering and design wonder, The Falkirk Wheel is a great day out. From the stunning Visitor Centre and basin, set at the heart of a natural amphitheatre of landscaped grounds, you can view the revolution of The Wheel or go for a stroll to see it from all angles.
I have included a video from YouTube. Check it out!

Very nice pictures. This would be amazing to see in person.
This is so impressive! I had never heard of this Falkirk Wheel before! The whole design and architecture of it is beautiful and the landscaping work around is marvelous!
Geez!
Wow! That’s was amazing. I watched YouTube over and over, just can’t get enough. Happily Anonymous said it correctly. It would be truly amazing if I can watch it face to face.
Thanks for sharing, KiwiPulse.
amazing photos!
wonderful! i’ve never seen anything quite like this before.
good job posting kiwipulse!
Hi Honey, I’ve left you a review on my blog. If you want more specific info, I’ve got it for you- email me. I look forward to hearing from you, Marie
That’s pretty cool. I have never heard of anything like that before. I like the horse sculpture in front of it too.
Amazing. This must be a tourist attraction yet I only hear of it here in your blog. You are very resourceful in terms of information. Thanx for sharing this to us
cool - very interesting - I’d nver heard of this!
Very cool… things like that prove “what the mind can conceive, we can achieve”… peace.
Very impressive!!! You always have such interesting posts!!!
Hugs, JJ
Stunning photos! However, Falkirk is not the world’s largest boat lift. I’m not sure which one is, but the Strepy-Thieu boat lift in Belgium is three times the height and can carry much bigger boats! Good photos of it here: http://www.binnenvaartinbeeld.com/strepy_thieu.htm
(It doesn’t rotate, though!)
Those photos is really amazing. I agreed more with happy anonymous. Awesome!
Wow! I didn’t know such a thing existed. I had to watch the video over again just to see it in action. Love the pictures, too!
This is amazing. What a engineering feat. The photos are great. They gave me a great idea of what this must be like to really see. Thanks it’ll be awhile before I get to Scotland..
Regards, Dorothy from grammology
The wheel was design by RMJM who also designed the new Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh, this hasn’t been as popular with the public, although I think its great.

All I can say is wow, it is truely amazing. Where did you to the research to find such a funtional and beautiful work of art. I would love to see it in person. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Although the Falkirk Wheel may not be the worlds largest boat lift I do believe it is however the worlds largest rotating boat lift. The Strepy-Thieu boat lift in Belgium does not rotate. It is more of a conveyor chain lift. Both of these boat lifts are equally impressive and now that I think about it they remind me an awful lot of amusement park rides I have seen. Makes me wonder if that is where the idea originated from.
Great post!
Definitely impressive! I think humans really can bring about outstanding achievements, when they’re not to busy fighting with each other. I wonder what would happen if everyone realized that!
