Halloween Pumpkins: Jack-O-Lantern
Posted in Art, Video
Halloween (also known as All Saints’ Day) is celebrated across the world from the United States,Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Japan, Australia, United Kingdom to parts of New Zealand on the last day of October. The most prominent symbol of Halloween has to be the carved orange pumpkin lit by a candle inside on every house’s doorstep.
The carved pumpkin is also called a jack-o-lantern, which got it’s origin from Europe. The European used to carve lanterns from turnips or rutabaga back in the days believing that the head was the most powerful part of the body with the spirit and the knowledge to frighten off any superstitions. The named jack-o-lantern traced back the Irish legend of Stingy Jack. The story of Jack, a greedy, gambler, hard-drinking old farmer has been summarized by Wikipedia as follows:
He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night with the only light he had: a candle inside of a hallowed turnip.
To celebrate Halloween with you all, I have compiled a number of creative pumpkin artworks for you to enjoy. Have a horrific Halloween!

History of Name from Wikipedia:
The term Halloween is shortened from All Hallows’ Even (both “even” and “eve” are abbreviations of “evening,” but “Halloween” gets its “n” from “even”) as it is the eve of “All Hallows’ Day,”which is now also known as All Saints’ Day.

Good ones; some of them are really topical and current too. I suppose pumpkins are a great way for people to express their creativity.
Sorry I missed out during the week end! Anyway, the specimens shown here need a lot of patience to carve but, if you can do them, they will be the talk of the neighborhood!
That video is great. The pictures are good too! Bit depressing I didn’t have a pumkin this year though!
