Marketing Techniques In The Movie Industry
Posted in Advertising, Video
A good marketing strategy is key to bringing success to the movie aside from the good story line. It’s a way to maximize target audience attendance, especially during the early release cycle. There are a number promotional techniques being used to promote new movies and strengthen sales. Below is a quick summary of each technique with some examples.
As a start there would be a teaser poster attempting to tease the audience with the movie’s plot and advertise when the movie is starting. Next comes the theatrical poster. There are also paid advertisements in newspaper, magazines, and inserts in books. Here are some awesome posters from the latest releases.

In the area of television and radio, this includes paid trailer on television and/or radio, product placement (paid active or passive insertion of film brand in drama or sitcom shows or passing mentions in dialogue), extended placement (full episodes of television talk shows like Oprah or The Views), production and paid broadcast of behind-the-scenes documentary-style shows, and there will also be advance trailers, longer previews, or behind-the-scenes footage on rental videos and DVDs.

With the power of the internet, of course for every movie there will be standalone studio sponsored website such as www.twilightthemovie.com. There’s also viral marketing where free distribution of trailers on movie-oriented websites and video user-generated-content websites, and rapid dissemination of links to this content by email and blogs (like KiwiPusle.com).
Merchandising tie ins will often include promotional giveaways such as branded drinking mugs, toys, or TV-shirts and paid co-branding or co-advertising (Juno soundtrack featuring Music From Juno) of a product with the film.
Co-adverting: Juno Movie Soundtrack
Everyone who goes to watch movies in the theater will notice slide shows and trailers of new releases shown prior to the main attraction. In the lobbies, there will likely see standups or 3D cardoard display of the characters from a film (animal characters from Madagascar: Escape2)

Yes, each movie now is a product that has to sell in competition with so many alternate products available that unless it is marketed properly, it will flop. You see the same happening in the area of books too!
Pleased! I came to know all about movie advertisement and marketing. Both online and offline marketing are essential. No one is substitute of other. The article has good content about a new movie to be successful.
They say that 100th luck is a charm :)
I just want to see if these comments can pass through, if not, then I don’t know what I’m doing wrong…
I like your blog, where do you find all this information?
Rados
The movie industry is something else! Don’t forget the marketing & branding for other products the movies themselves do either, like the prominently displayed soft drinks and snacks consumed by actors, vehicles driven by them, electronic goodies used by them, etc….
Marketing of movies these days is an incredibly complex and multifarious process. And then there is the merchandising of movie related products; that is a whole other business.
Youtube could be an alternative of movie marketing
Yes, Nicole has brought in another dimension to the marketing of movies. The spin offs apart from just gate collection is in franchising the entire range of merchandise like T shirts etc.
I think the movie industry is a great example of successful marketing. Every time a new movie comes out, they always create hype around it and release trailers and teasers.
All the info on your website was great, I like the nice clean layout of posts.
Jage mentioned YouTube here. I think it’s a great way for a company to test the effects of their new trailer and then spread it via other media. Today, if you are not offering a staggering movie, it’s like you do not offer anything at all.
Great post, Kiwi. Love the pic and the movie industry advertising techniques. It’s been awhile so here’s a WILD WAVE!!!
Cheers! JJ

@Justin Wright,I agree with you about movie industry. It is really very very successful marketing. But the thing that I always laugh is that this movies have marketing 10 or 15 time better then this movies are really. And 90% of this movies are not worth of watching and they have commercials like Terminator II.

I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I found your article on hair extremely informative… personally, hair extensions have always been a passion of mine so I really liked your take. My favorite type of hair is remy hair, I just love the texture and I think Indian hair holds up best. Thanks again, I’ll be stopping by soon!
