Microsoft Surface: My Dream Interactive Table

The genius inventors at Microsoft are at it again with their high-tech innovations. They are developing the Microsoft Surface which is a new technology that allows one or many users to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures or physical objects (i.e. camera, pda, cellphone, etc). The company plan to add this new technology in the hospitality businesses such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, public entertainment venues and the military for tactical overviews.

The Microsoft Surface has five cameras inside the table that record reflections of infrared light from human fingertips. The Surface has been optimized to respond to 52 touches at a time. The most interesting features in the Surface are the direct interaction, multi-touch contact, multi-user experience and object recognition. The direct interaction allows the user(s) to launch and use an application without using a mouse or keyboard. The multi-touch contact enable multiple contact points with an interface which several people can interact with an application simultaneously.

The Microsoft Surface is a 30-inch (76 cm) display in a table-like form factor, 22 inches (56 cm) high, 21 inches (53 cm) deep, and 42 inches (107 cm) wide. The Surface tabletop is acrylic and its interior frame is powder-coated steel. The Surface runs on a custom version of Windows Vista and has wired Ethernet 10/100, wireless 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.

The price of the Surface will be around $5,000 to $10,000 per unit and it will be available in 2011 for commercial purposes. However Microsoft said it expects prices to drop enough to make consumer versions feasible in 2010. This is not just a cool gadget to get people to interact and socialize, but it also is a great investment for businesses. I think it’s just a big version of the iPod Touch. What do you think?

Surface features a 30-inch tabletop display that allow several people to have unique abilities to work independently or simultaneously. All without using a mouse or a keyboard.

Mind blowing. As it is I am spending too much time at the computer and with a home version like this, I am sure to be more on the receiving end from the good lady! Shall wait for the prices to be affordable though.

“…it will be available in 2011 for commercial purposes. However Microsoft said it expects prices to drop enough to make consumer versions feasible in 2010.”

It is available this month for commercial purposes (i.e. retail, government buys it), and they expect it to be inexpensive enough for consumer purposes (i.e. everyone buys it) by 2011.

This table is awesome. Hopefully one day they’re affordable and I’ll have one! It’ll be neat to see them in waiting rooms, bars, and lounges.

I disagree with your reference to Microsoft being innovative. I love Microsoft but they are now a “ME TOO” company because Apple is just a few up on them. Whatever they come up with…seems to lack in technology. I wouldn’t be surprised if apple already has one of these in their lab.

beauty blog:

Microsoft has been researching the technology for Microsoft Surface since 2001. There is a lot of innovative technology behind the Surface. If Apple has one in their lab (I doubt it) and they come out with it after Microsoft, wouldn’t that make Apple the “ME TOO” company, in this case?

(Just in case, don’t try to compare iPhone and Surface — totally different products with different markets and different purposes.)

JB,
Why can’t beauty blog compare iPhone to Surface being that the topic is innovation and not purpose? I am not big on either Microsoft or Apple, however when using a Windows OS and a MAC OS I find that windows technology doesn’t pack enough punch as the Apple technology. So yes I would agree to some degree that Apple is leading in the innovation category.

Steve,

Yes, one could discuss the iPhone when talking about the relative innnovativeness of Microsoft and Apple, but I wasn’t really going for that. I was just trying to point out that in this case (the Surface), Microsoft is very innovative. Apple is also innovative. I pre-emptively brought up the iPhone because some people try to discount the innovativeness of Surface by saying stuff like “Microsoft copied the iPhone with the Surface but couldn’t make it as small! haha!” which I’m sure you can see is not a reasonable point.
