National Geographic Channel: Ant Farm
Posted in Advertising, Video
National Geographic Channel have always interested me with their documentaries involving nature, science, culture, and history. They are now on the streets in Norway trying to attract passengers at the train and bus stations with their advertising board… full of ants! The blue substance inside the board is a special type of gel. The gel serves as both habitat and nutrition for ants, allowing you to watch in awe as the blue gel inside the board turn into a fascinating colony of tunnels. It is also transparent so that people can watch from both sides of the board. The gel was developed by NASA and is now sold in ant aquariums known as AntWorks.
I think the board should be placed under shadow or inside a building where people can comfortably study the ants and how they dig tunnels over a period of time. And what’s amazing is that these ants can live within this habitat for up to 5-6 months!

Hi Salon, thanks for the cool feedback. In terms of were we cruel? Hopefully the sticker we stuck on the bus shelter helps explain that we did think about the ants as humans and treated them with respect :) We will update more videos very soon we just need to edit the footage as it’s all time lapsed over the months. This is our 3rd installation since last year and we are actually trying for the world guinness records as it’s a first of it’s kind this large. Thanks Marco
Info on bus shelter:
This unique gel contains all the water and nutrients ants need to remain healthy and happy. We’ve also added an anti-fungal agent to make sure our little friends don’t get any infections. This custom designed container has lots of hidden vents to provide sufficient air, and maintain a constant ideal temperature of 60 -70 degrees celsius. Don’t worry, the holes are too tiny for the ants to crawl through and the container will protect them from the hottest sun. We hope you’ll enjoy this educational demonstration provided by our hard-working friends. Ants are social creatures - they display a whole range of co-operative behaviours that both kids and adults alike can learn from. In the meantime, don’t forget to take good care of your teeth.
that is amazing!
I think I’m going to have to buy one of these ant farms now. That is just so cool. National Geographic is genius for this advertising campaign. Very smart way to get people to notice you. I hope they put them in more places in the world. Maybe make them even bigger. Awesome!!!
