Panopticons: Singing Ringing Tree

Written on February 3, 2008 by KiwiPulse - Posted in Art, Sculpture

This steel sculpture has won the National Award of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for architectural excellence in 2007. The sculpture is set in the landscape of the Pennines overlooking Burnley, in the north west of England. It was designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu. This musical sculpture is called the Singing Ringing Tree because of the harmonic and singing qualities that the tree produce by tuning the pipes. It was constructed from pipes of galvanised steel, which with the help of the wind it produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves. This is just amazing. What an excellent staggering piece of iconic environmental art, as one gentlemen has commented on the video below. It will capture the imagination of everyone who sees it. The videos below will give more info about this amazing piece of art. You will also be able to hear the sound of this fabulous Sing Ringing Tree! :D

That’s hella cool. It’d scare the crap out of me if I was out there on a windy night & didn’t know it was there, though! Thanks for sharing.

That is really amazing! Does the sound come because of the wind blowing thru the pipes or some other way?

I think the idea is truly amazing. The architects totally deserve the award. However, I think the sound is a bit too scary. I wouldn’t want to be there on a windy night. I think it looks more beautiful than it sounds.

Wow that is an amazing structure. It sure belts out a lot of sound. Wouldn’t want it in my backyard, but sure looks cool.
