The Picture Magazine

Written on October 30, 2007 by KiwiPulse - Posted in Advertising

First thing I had in mind when I saw these ads was “What The Hell!”. The Picture magazine is the biggest-selling men´s magazine in Australia. The magazine has a unique combination of glamour, humour and a heavy bias toward Australian content. You can easily find titles such as “Find My G-Spot!”, “Huge Boobs”, and “I Can Be A Bit of A Pervert!” as shown below. I guess it rated for mature audience. Who doesn’t wish to spank a monkey sitting on their sofa.

I don’t get what the last euphemism is. I’ve either not heard it or forgotten it, and I’m scared to Google it.

I dig this blog though, nice work.

I’ve been buying THE PICTURE since it’s 1st issue in 1988. In fact, i still have the 1st issue and scored a years subscription to it! I collect the mag and could not say how many issues i have. It’s still a entertaining read, and is indeed Australia’s largest selling mag, but i think it’s dropped a bit. The mag sprang as a sister publication to PEOPLE Magazine. Australia’s People should not be compared to the famous American People mag. Most of the staff of the early Picture mag were from People. The main photographer, Walter Glover, was also from People. And most of the early models came across from Picture. In fact, the war between the two mags got so heated, that any models posing for Picture were not allowe to pose for People again. This resulted in a massive scandal as 9 time People covergirl, Melinda Smith, was denied being the pin-up of the year as she posed for Picture mag as well! Luckily, Melinda was voted Picture mag’s innaugural “Pin up of the year” to compesate. People also had a brief policy of not allowing any “wives and girlfriends” to send in pics of themselves if they were also in Picture. The glory days for Picture were the mid-late 90’s. Then, the mag featured average Aussie (and Kiwi!) girls, some times sprinkled with well know models like Jo Guest, Kirsten Imrie and Adele Stephens, and strippers like Cheetah, Raquel Samuels and Kylie Day. Sadly, it’s now all professional strippers. No “real” woman has won the “Home girl of the year” comp since the year 2000. In the “good old days” the magazine was very much aimed at the working class “blokes” and biker types. Or, a “Ocker” type person if you will. In recent times it’s gone more high-glam - which i think means it’s lost it’s soul a bit. More and more pin ups are overseas models whose pictorials are bought. Gone are the days when a person looked forward to a Bambi, John Vitone or Carol Atkins shoot. The covering of “biker beano’s” have long since finished. The popular tattoo page is long gone. Another example of unwelcome change was the stopping of using false characters, who were like ambassadors for the mag. The most popular and famous was Yarna Wench (real name never revealed). To this day, people still request her to return. Following her was “Kylie the ‘Prenctice” (Bianca). Following her “Spunky Nude Sheila Man (Shannon). No “mascot” has been in use for years. Picture tried to get one going with “Abbey” (another professional stripper from Sydney) but she didnt last long. The Home Girl of the Year, usually voted for by readers, became a representative of the magazine for her year, but in recent years, it’s not uncommon for the “Homie” to only appear as a pin up and is never seen again. Prior to recent events, the Home Girl of the year would appear in the magazine often. This last happened with Allie, who was from New Zealand. Sadly, the Home Girl of the week” is, as its always been, judged by the Editor. 12 or so nominees are then chosen to go into the running for the Homie of the year. Again, these nominees are chosen by the editor. Hence, the entrants are nearly all professional strippers with no personalities and huge fake tits. Another terrible “innovation” is the over use of “air brushing”, or what is called these days “photoshopping”. It’s use is the bane of all who like true glamour photography and is a insult to true artists like Walter Glover, Elio Loccisano and Bambi.

Spin off magazines included Sextra, which was replaced by Picture Premium. Bi-monthly “100% Home Girls” began in 1999 and is still going. Home GIrls videos were also produced from 1996-2000 are very rare to find now. Contractual obligations over the years have seen Picture or People cover strip comps like Miss Nude, Miss Erotica, Exotic Angels and Lesbian Lust.

    So, there ya go.

I am looking for an interview done that I believe was called ‘Dead Man Walking’ about a guy who claimed to have been bitten by venomous snakes 162 times. I believe this interview was in either the Picture or People magazines. Can anyone help me find this interview???

  15. KiwiPulse on October 12th, 2008 at 10:45 am

I have found this article from outside magazine which talk about Bill Haast who have been bitten 163 times by some of the world’s deadliest snakes. I hope it’s the one you looking for.

  16. Susanne on October 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am

Hi KiwiPulse, thanx for the quick reply :-) Unfortunately this is not the article I’m looking for. The interviewee was an Australian guy called Gary Allen (nickname ‘Snake’) who claims to be a herpologist and lives in Dimbulah, North of Cairns. The interview was definately in either a Picture or People Mag.

  17. KiwiPulse on October 12th, 2008 at 12:34 pm

If I can’t find it on google. I can’t help you much. You should contact the magazine to ask them to send you the article. Maybe it should work. :D

    Hi Craig,

Was wondering if you had a copy of february 1995 picture mag. I was covergirl and centrefold for that issue (cheerleader) also featured in Sextra at same time. Am looking for a copy if you know anyone I would be happy to pay them TOP dollar.
    Regards Kylie

Hello Craig or to anyone that might have the 21st of January 2009 edition of The Picture, is there any way I can get a copy?

    Please and thankyou

  24. Glenn on February 3rd, 2009 at 9:11 am

  26. Craig on April 26th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Kylie - Were you Bianca? Was your issue #336 (15/2/95)??

  27. Craig on April 26th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

For the info of others. Picture is online at picturemag.com. Most of the covergirls are on there as well as a few homies for each issue. These shots are different from the magazine shots and are often not retouched. Alas, they take down alot of the older stuff, so if you want to download pics, be quick.

And if anyone knows the real name of the chick who played Yarna Wench, let me know. it’s been driving me nuts.

Hi, melinda smith was my all time fav in the mag , what ever happened to her ? cant find her on the net at all , anyone know, thanks.

  30. Dave on May 6th, 2009 at 4:47 am

    Hi Craig.

I too am asking for a favour. I’m looking for the issue at the Cockatoo Rodeo (should be a 2007 issue). Can you give me the issue number or scan the photos and email them too me?

    Cheers.

  31. agent smith on May 9th, 2009 at 11:04 am

    Hi Craig,
You seem to be in high demand round these parts. I am chasing pic’s of a girl back in a 2003 issue of picture or people mag. The photo shoot was done at a surf beach, and the girl was tanned and had braided hair. I think she was on a couple of pages in the middle somewhere. If you have the issue number or could possibly email scans then not only would you be my hero but I could also fill you in on how this sweet young lady came to doing a nude photo shoot ;)
    Thanks!

  32. ? on May 18th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Actually, Craig, that’s not entirely true.

I’m doing a shoot in a few weeks for 100% Homegirls and I’m not a stripper, nor do I have ‘fake tits’. I’m doing it because I earn $7 an hour as an apprentice electrician and they’re going to pay me almost 4 grand for 3 shoots.

I also asked about them airbrushing out a tattoo, and was told they ‘do not airbrush’.

    So there.

  33. Craig on June 26th, 2009 at 12:40 am

melinda Smith was my fave too! She should have won cover girl of the year at People, but because she switched to the newly released Picture, they more or less banned her! I’ll try look into some of the requests you people have asked.

As for the entry above, good on you. I am not bagging you. In fact, it’s people like you who should be in the mag more! 100% homies is pretty much a different kettle of fish to the standard Picture mag.

And another thing. Anyone remember the Home girls videos? I never bought one, but thought they might pop up somewhere (not on Ebay though, as they clamp down on this stuff hard).

  34. agent smith on June 26th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

    Hi Craig,
Just when I thought all hope was gone of me ever finding these pics, you come by (on the 26th again?!) and renewed my faith. Just a little intro into the backstory to the girl I’m looking for, her mum was my high school teacher… ;)
Ohh and to the girl above this is the reason why they pay you 4 grand, it will follow you forever, with people like me looking for the pic’s of you. But if your ok with that (your bos will probably tape up the spread eagel pic of you in the work shitta and make regular visits to knock one out) then thats cool, more power to you I say!
Craig, I can email you a pic of the girl if that will help?
    Thanks

    so there…
